| Kevin Harvick won Saturday night’s Budweiser Shootout at Daytona, his second consecutive victory in the preseason event.
Harvick roared past Greg Biffle on the final green flag lap of race, passing Greg Biffle moments before Biffle and Jeff Gordon made contact at the entrance to Turn 3 triggering a eight-car accident that forced the event to end under caution.
Cars using WIX Filters swept the top-five positions in the race while Harvick became the fourth driver to win consecutive Budweiser Shootouts, joining Neil Bonnett, Ken Schrader and Tony Stewart.
The final restart of the race came on lap 75 with Biffle leading the race. Biffle chose to restart in the outside lane, a move that played to Harvick’s advantage.
“I was happy Greg [Biffle] chose the outside because he set the pace to start,” Harvick said. “We were able to get the best restart we had all night and push him out there and were able to just carry that momentum in to turn one. Kinda drug the brake a little bit to let the No. 9 [Kasey Kahne] get right up behind us to stay side-by-side with the No. 16 [Biffle] so that we didn't get any three wide or anybody else involved in the mix. We were able to get a good push down the back. I don't know what happened after that.
“When Biffle chose the top lane, I knew it was going to be up to me to get a good restart because we were off just a touch on the ratios. I needed to roll the start just enough to get to his bumper. It timed out perfect. I was able to get Greg out there. I knew if I could get him out, I was able to get up underneath him with the momentum we carried into one, then at that point I started dragging the brake to make sure we stayed side‑by‑side so we didn't drag a faster line by him or somebody else. I drug us back to the 9 car. I was hoping that my line would get there before his line. I knew if we would get to turn three, I was going to be in better shape because I had tires and he didn't. I wanted to maintain side‑by‑side with Biffle because I thought that I had an advantage over him once we got to the next corner.
“It's a lot of fun to win. I know we started the last year the same way. We led a bunch of laps, ran at the front all night. To go out and have that car start cold, never have a lap on the racetrack, to have it run like it ran, says a lot for the preparation of the team. It's a lot about the details. The guys at the shop, engine shop, everybody always thanks those guys, but the tremendous amount of work they did this week, to field two cars that were good, that were that good for this race, I'm very proud of them.
Harvick led five times for 21 of the 76 laps. He averaged 144.670 mph in a race that took one hour, 18 minutes and 48 seconds. The race featured 12 lead changes among five drivers and was slowed by five cautions for 14 laps.
